Frequently Asked Questions

Everything about documents, deposits, insurance and driving in Albania, in one place. If your question is not here, message us on WhatsApp — we answer in minutes.

Do I need to leave a deposit or a credit card?

No. There is no deposit, no credit card and no payment in advance. You pay when you pick up the car and we hand over the keys straight away.

What documents do I need to bring?

A valid driving licence held for at least one year, and your passport or national ID card. EU and international driving licences are accepted; if your licence is not written in Latin characters, add an International Driving Permit. If the booking and the driving licence name do not match, bring a written authorisation.

What is the minimum age to rent a car?

In Albania you can drive from 18, but the age limit is set by the rental company. For us the minimum is 21, with the licence held for at least one year.

What does the insurance cover?

All our cars include third-party liability insurance and cover for damage to the vehicle. There is no fixed excess: what stays with you depends on the damage and on the car, and it is the amount the garage quotes for the repair. Before the work is done we tell you the figure with the details, and we always tell you what is not covered. Report any damage to us immediately, even if it is small: it is late reporting, not the damage itself, that usually costs a customer money.

Are the kilometres really unlimited?

Yes. No rental has a kilometre limit. You can drive from the airport to the coast and up to the mountains on the same rental without a single extra euro.

How and when do I pay?

On pick-up, at the counter, by cash or card. Nothing is charged in advance, and there is nothing left to settle when you return the car.

Is the car cleaned before every rental?

Yes. Every car is cleaned inside and out before each handover, and it is given to you clean and ready to drive. If something is not right when you collect it, tell us straight away and we sort it out there and then.

How does the pick-up at Tirana Airport work?

We are in front of the terminal, so there is no shuttle bus and no waiting room. Send us your flight number on WhatsApp: if the flight is delayed or lands at 3 a.m., we simply wait for you, 24/7 and at no extra cost.

What are the speed limits, and what happens if I get fined?

In towns the limit is 40 km/h unless the signs say otherwise, outside towns it is 80 to 90 km/h, and 110 km/h on the motorway. Fines are issued on the spot and in lek.

Can I drive after drinking?

No. The limit in Albania is 0.01%, which legally is almost nothing: in practice one drink is enough to go over it. Police can stop any driver and ask for a breath test at any time, and refusing costs you a fine on top. The insurance on the car does not cover you if you drive over the limit. If you have been drinking, the car stays parked.

Is it difficult to drive in Albania at night?

The main roads are paved and lit, but on the secondary roads you can meet pedestrians, animals, unlit vehicles and speed bumps with no warning. Our advice: do the mountain stretches in daylight, stay on the main carriageway and do not overtake on bends.

Can someone else drive the car as well?

Only the drivers named on the contract are covered by the insurance. If somebody else is going to drive, tell us when you collect the car and we add them to the contract before handing over the keys. An undeclared driver can void the cover entirely, which in practice means paying for the whole damage yourself.

How and when do I return the car?

Bring it back to the same place in front of the terminal, at the time we agreed, and if your flight home moves, message us: we hold the car for you and agree a new time.

What happens if the car breaks down?

Call or WhatsApp the number written on your contract, day or night. We stay with you on the phone while we work out what is quickest, and we send a replacement car to wherever you are in Albania when the car cannot be repaired on the spot. Where we cannot send a car of ours, we tell you immediately what we cover, so there are no surprises later.

There has been an accident: what do I do?

First things first: if anyone is hurt, or the road is blocked, nobody moves — call 112, the only emergency number in Albania, and warn us on WhatsApp at the same time. Take photos of everything: the two cars, the plates, the road, the damage and the other driver's documents. Do not admit fault, do not sign anything and do not discuss money at the roadside: the police report is what the insurance reads, and you have the right to use the assistance of your own insurance. If nobody is hurt and the road is clear, photograph the positions of the two cars and the debris on the road first, and only then move them aside.

Are there tolls or vignettes in Albania?

There is no vignette: nothing to buy, nothing to stick on the windscreen. Most roads, including the ones from the airport to the coast and the mountains, are free. Three tolls exist: the Kalimash tunnel on the road to Kosovo, about 5 euros; the Thumanë-Kashar bypass just outside the airport, about 250 lek; and the Llogara tunnel on the coastal road to Vlorë and Sarandë, about 250 lek. At all three you pay at the booth in lek or euros; card works at some of them, so keep small notes. If your route includes one of them, tell us at pick-up and we will show you the exit.

Can I cross the border with the car?

Taking the car outside Albania is allowed only for the countries listed here: Montenegro, North Macedonia and Greece, and only with our written authorisation given before pick-up. A cross-border supplement of [DA COMPILARE: cross_border_per_day] per day applies. Kosovo is covered only by a specific written authorisation, signed in advance, which also states that the insurance is valid there. The insurance does not cover the wheels, the tyres or the glass. Ask us before you leave: an unauthorised border crossing can void the cover entirely. Write to us with your dates and we tell you what is possible.

Is it safe to drive in Albania?

Yes. The road infrastructure has improved a great deal and meets European standards.

Do I need an international driving permit to drive in Albania?

As a rule, driving licences from EU and South Eastern European countries, as well as the UK and the United States, are accepted in Albania without an international permit. If in doubt, contact us.
